In one of the weirdest CBA signings in the last few years, Sun Yue has completed his move to the Beijing Ducks from the renegade Chinese team, the Beijing Olympians. The move is still not confirmed by either team but Sina Sports is claiming the deal is basically completed.
Sun was technically on loan at the Ducks along with three other members of the Beijing Olympians, a former CBA team who removed themselves from the direct control of the Chinese basketball administration almost a decade ago. The team had been playing in the American Basketball Association among other overseas leagues following their refusal to release its Chinese players for international duty back in 2005.
Following the decision to ‘loan’ the former LA Laker out to the Ducks for two years and the death of the Olympians owner, Milton Lee, both occurring in September 2013, Sun’s long-term future, along with other loanees Zhang Songtao, Li Wei and Huang Hubei seemed up in the air. However, a negotiated fee of around $400k appears to have made all four of the players full-time members of the Beijing team effective immediately. Sun, and Zhang to a lesser degree, were big parts of the Ducks championship run last season and the team’s front office was keen to keep the nucleus of its team together as it looks to win its third title in four years.
