In a new twist to what has already been a problematic storyline for the Shanghai Sharks, Gilbert Arenas is set to return to the United States for treatment on a groin injury. Sina are quoting a report coming out of Jilin which suggests Arenas will not back until January 6th. If that were to be the case, it would rule the former NBA All-Star out of the two-game home series with Beijing and Tianjin.
Things got really interesting early today when on his weibo page today, Arenas wrote,
Happy New Years .. im going to New York for a few days to get treatment on my groin .. i wasn’t 100 percent when i came back and i pulled another groin muscle .. its not really bad just need american meds to speed up the recovery time ….
Understandably, this has not been well received by local fans, who are not happy with the new development and the impact it will have on the Sharks’ faltering season.
Indeed several have already sarcastically predicted the arrival of Zaid Abbas for the 2013/14 CBA season. This is a reference to the rule that teams who finish in the bottom five places in the league get an extra ‘non-Asian’ foreigner for the following season and as per CBA randomness, the third import is often an Arabic player.
Abbas has led three teams who finished in the ‘Dead Pool’ the previous year to the playoffs in his last three seasons (including Shanghai in 2009) and looks set to do the same with new employers, the Shandong Lions. With some fans already predicting the return of Abbas, there is now a real fear of doom taking amid pockets of the Shanghai fan base- something not helped by the re-injured Arenas
