Sharks’ point guard Gilbert Arenas hopes to be playing within the next five days and has cited the two-game road trip to Guangdong province as his time frame for his return.
Writing on his ‘Agent0’ Weibo page today, Arenas posted, “theres a very good chance i play on this road trip (I’m excited)”. This would make sense given that his temporary replacement, Ryan Forehan-Kelly, was signed on a ten-day contract (albeit according to Arena’s agent) a week ago and that deal expires after Wednesday’s game against the Guangdong Tigers.
Early arrivals to the last three Shanghai home games will have seen Arenas going through shooting drills with trainers and the American has looked comfortable moving, pivoting, coming around screens and firing off jump shots.
The former All-Star did not travel with the team during the recent road trips to Xinjiang and Shanxi, and has spent time re-cooperating in Shanghai instead. Local media reports have also suggested that main thing holding him back in the last few days was that Arenas was still trying to get back the fitness needed to play starters minutes.
In theory, the game against the Tigers may well be the return date of Agent Zero (tomorrow’s game against the Dongguan Leopards might still be a little too soon and Forehan-Kelly played very well in the previous game against Zhejiang).
However, the Sharks will presumably make that decision as close to the game as possible Since arriving last Saturday, RFK has averaged 11.7ppg but also has been a strong leader within the team.
Moreover, given that he is still eligible for at least two more games, head coach Daniel Panaggio might stick with the veteran and bring in Arenas for Friday’s home game against the Fujian Sturgeons.
